This Privacy Policy describes what data niallarnfield.com collects, why, how it’s used, and what choices you have. It’s written in plain English; if anything’s unclear, reach out via the contact details at the bottom.
In short
- If you send an enquiry, I use your name, email and message to reply and to talk about your project.
- Analytics only runs if you accept it in the cookie banner. If you reject it, no analytics cookies are set.
- I don’t sell your details to advertisers or marketers.
- Old enquiries are reviewed and deleted once a year.
- You can withdraw your consent to analytics at any time.
- The hosting provider keeps normal server access logs, as every website host does.
- You can ask to see, correct or delete your data, and you can complain to the ICO.
- If anything here is unclear, email me and I will explain it.
The full detail is below.
Who runs this site
This site is operated by Niall Arnfield, an independent designer-developer based in Manchester, United Kingdom. For data-protection purposes I am the data controller for any personal information collected here. You can contact me at niall@niallarnfield.com or via LinkedIn.
What data this site collects
Two distinct things:
- Information you send through the enquiry form or by email. Most pages include a project enquiry form in the footer. Enquiries are emailed to niall@niallarnfield.com. I use the details you provide to respond and discuss your project. The current website form stores aggregate submission counts in WordPress, without enquiry names, email addresses or message text in those counts. Short-lived checks help reject spam and repeated submissions.
- Usage statistics via Google Analytics 4, but only if you give consent via the cookie banner. If you accept, GA4 records which pages you visit, an approximate location derived from your connection, what device and browser you use, and how you navigate between pages. Google uses IP addresses when deriving approximate location information, then discards them rather than logging or storing them in Analytics. If you reject, none of this is collected and no analytics cookies are set.
Why I collect it
| Data | Purpose | Legal basis (UK GDPR) |
|---|---|---|
| Email contents (name, email, project details) | Replying to your enquiry; scoping a possible engagement | Legitimate interest — you contacted me asking for a reply |
| Google Analytics 4 data | Understanding which pages get read so I can improve the site | Your consent (via the cookie banner) |
How long I keep it
- Email correspondence: old enquiries and emailed copies are reviewed and deleted annually. This is an annual housekeeping practice rather than an automatic deletion exactly 12 months after submission. Records needed for an active engagement are handled under that engagement’s requirements.
- Analytics data: user-level and event-level retention is controlled by the Analytics property settings. Aggregated reports may be used to review site performance. Please contact me for the currently configured retention period.
Who else sees the data
- Google — processes Google Analytics 4 data on my behalf if you consent to analytics cookies. Google’s own privacy policy applies to that data: policies.google.com/privacy.
- IONOS — the hosting provider for niallarnfield.com. They process server access logs as part of normal hosting operations.
- Email and website operations: enquiry messages pass through the services used to host the website and deliver email. I do not sell enquiry information to advertisers or marketers.
Your rights
Under UK GDPR you have the right to:
- Ask what personal data I hold about you
- Ask for a copy of that data
- Ask me to correct anything that’s wrong
- Ask me to delete the data (subject to any legal obligation I have to retain it)
- Object to specific uses of the data, or withdraw consent for analytics at any time
- Complain to the UK Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) if you think your rights have been breached: ico.org.uk
To exercise any of these rights, email niall@niallarnfield.com. I’ll respond inside the statutory 30 days — usually much sooner.
Cookies
This site uses necessary cookies to remember consent choices and support essential website functions. Optional analytics cookies are used only with consent:
- Analytics cookies (Google Analytics 4): set only after you click “Accept” on the cookie banner. They identify your browser across pages so visit patterns can be aggregated. You can revoke consent anytime by opening the “Manage consent” control and changing your settings.
The site doesn’t use:
- Advertising or remarketing cookies
- Social-media tracking pixels (Facebook, LinkedIn Insight, etc.)
- Session-replay or heatmap tools
- Third-party font requests: the website’s fonts are served from this website
Changes to this policy
If I change how the site collects or uses data, the “Last updated” date at the top of this page will change and the new version will replace this one. Material changes will also be reflected in the cookie banner so returning visitors are prompted to review.
